Middlesbrough is at the heart of the North East situated on the banks of the River Tees and surrounded by beautiful coast and countryside. The many shops, art galleries and annual festivals make Middlesbrough an ideal location to experience a diverse range of culture.
The Sunday Times University Guide voted Middlesbrough’s city centre based University as having the cheapest university managed accommodation in the UK – this means plenty of spare cash for students to explore the range of attractions on offer.
Here’s what students have to say about Middlesbrough...
The Middlesbrough Empire
Corporation Road, Middlesbrough
Tel: 01642 253553
The Empire is a big converted music hall and has a really grand feeling about it. For me, ‘Rock N Roll Disco’ on a Saturday night is the place to be with indie, punk and funk plus live bands. There are loads of different bands and DJs playing and club nights throughout the month and there are three floors to explore as well, so you’re bound to find something you like!

Club M @ Tall Trees
Green Lane, Yarm, Cleveland
Tel: 01642 786786
It's slightly out of town, which involves either a taxi ride or a designated driver, but Club M is well worth the visit. Students and clubbers from all over the UK meet up here so it’s always full of like-minded people.

If you want a bit to eat head down to Linthorpe Road where you’ll find everything you want from Chinese to Italian to good old English food!
Central Park
337 Linthorpe Road, Middlesbrough
Tel: 01642 820586
If your looking for a break from the usual student haunts then Central Park is the place to go. It is an American Italian restaurant in classy surroundings with an accompanying bar. My friends and I often visit here to treat ourselves but it won’t break the bank too much because they do daily offers and student discounts to help us enjoy a little bit of luxury!

Party Pants
Unit 5, Forbes Building, Linthorpe Road, Middlesbrough
Tel: 01642 515144
My student life has involved numerous fancy dress parties and Party Pants is my favourite shop to find great togs. They started off as a 60 / 70s clothing store and there’s still loads of old retro Hawaiian shirts and flares. More recently, they’ve expanded and now stock fancy dress costumes, wigs and all sorts of novelty blow-up props. My personal favourite has been the Scooby Doo costume I wore on my birthday last year!

Middlesbrough Music Live

If you stick around for the Summer then I would recommend a visit to the Middlesbrough Music Live festival. There are usually loads of new bands and local talent playing across various stages and in venues around the town centre plus comedy and open mic areas. Better than that are the headline acts, in the past couple of years I’ve seen Kasabian, Keane, The Ordinary Boys and Ocean Colour Scene – all without parting with a single penny.

Albert Park
01642 819808 / 829319
Albert Park is a great place to get together with your mates and banish a Sunday morning hangover. There’s 70 acres of park to relax in or kick a ball around as well as a boating lake, tennis courts and rollerskating rink if you’re feeling a bit more active. The park is glorious in Summer but even when it’s snowing, I like to get wrapped up and take a stroll to clear my head.
