Newcastle was voted ‘top English city’ in the 2005 Guardian travel guides for the third time running. This title comes as no surprise to those who know the city as it is bursting with entertainment, stylish shops and bars and lets not forget the famous St James’s Park – the home of Newcastle United Football Club.
Both Newcastle University and Northumbria University are situated in Newcastle, which means the city is literally buzzing with students and things to do. Here is what they have to say about their city...

In Newcastle the only student night to go to is on a Monday at Tiger Tiger. Typically, a good place to go to before Tiger Tiger is Players Bar in the Gate. You can get alcopops for £1 and also double vodka and draught mixer for £1.50. The music is good and it’s a good place to start off your night and get you in the mood for Tiger Tiger! Vodka Island at Tiger Tiger, on a Monday, offers double vodka and Redbull for only £2 - on a student budget it’s a perfect price to help you have a fab night out!
Another good tip for students is to get hold of a ‘Snapfax’, it has great deals for cheap haircuts, cheap entry to popular nightclubs and provides discounts at many restaurants and stores throughout your student city.

The Hancock

Tel: 0191 281 5653
This pub is really close to the University Library, which makes it a constant temptation when you’ve got brain block from too much studying. It’s a regular with students, day and night, who congregate for the great grub and offers on drinks. The décor is bright, the staff are good fun and there’s nothing pretentious about The Hancock. Make sure you get a yellow card so you can take full advantage of the cheap pints.

Excellent food at an even better price... And with live jazz entertainment too! It’s ideal for a first date or a night out with friends. Go before 7pm and have two courses plus a glass of champagne for just £6.95. Or, try a three-course Sunday lunch for just £9.95. Who said students couldn’t afford to eat in style?
Charlie’s Chinese Buffet

Definitely the cheap and cheerful option but there is no need to be fussy when it comes to great food. Charlie’s offers the ‘all you can eat’ option which will satisfy any appetite. It does get busy at popular times of the day but that’s a sign that it really is good value for money and also adds to the laidback self service style.
